Sarah & Comet competing in a Working Test

Sarah Meakes, Founder and Trainer at The Woof Works

First and foremost my dogs, above and beyond working and competing them, are important members of the family. The majority of owners of gundog breeds are not going to work or compete their dogs, most are intended as family pets. We understand this here at The Woof Works, and we understand that what owners of dogs are largely looking for is control; a dog that comes back when it is called, stays close if asked and doesn’t pull on the lead. It is my goal to give our clients the key information and training tools that they really need to achieve this and to be able to enjoy their dogs in real life scenarios!

I have a team of three working labs, Lottie, Luther and Comet, all of whom I have worked on shoots, either picking up or in the beating line. I am the Working Test Secretary for the United Retriever Club, Bucks Area and it is in gundog working test competitions that my real passion lies. I love training a dog to competition standard and relish the level of engagement that this brings from my dogs and the partnership that it creates.

Gundog training using positive reward based methods is two-fold in its results. It not only teaches both you and your dog important potentially life saving skills, it builds engagement with your dog which is absolutely fundamental to control. Even the very basics of gundog training will help to improve the general obedience levels of your dog and your confidence in handling your dog.
