Is Gundog Training only for people that want to work their dog?

Absolutely not! Many of our clients have pet dogs and attend our classes to help keep their dogs’ brains active.  Our classes are mixed so you will be learning with dogs that are likely to take part in Working Tests or Shoots but whether a pet or a working dog, we train both the same way using rewards based methods. After all recall is recall regardless of your breed of dog!

What does Gundog Training involve?

Each class is broken down into an explanation of the theory and demonstration of the exercise with one of our own dogs. Then each handler practices in their own area in plenty of space.  We visit each dog to observe and guide during the session.  Whilst we are teaching the theory, the dogs are able to rest in the cars. Classes finish with the opportunity to evaluate and discuss the training.

How will it help me and my dog?

Gundog Training has many benefits for both you and your dog.  If you have a working breed, keeping his brain active is just as important as keeping him physically active. You will find that your dog is alert and engaged during training, often he will be tired and sleep well afterwards! It will help you to better understand your dog and to develop a stronger partnership resulting in more control!

We welcome all gundog breeds irrespective of whether you have plans to work your dog or not.

Do I need to practice at home?

Yes! Ideally you should be doing training at home to cement key skills taught during training. After every class, you will be provided with key pointers to help you and your dog.

What equipment do I need?

Not much to start! Collar, lead, favourite toy and lots of high value treats. We train in all weathers so a good pair of wellies and waterproof clothing is invaluable!

We introduce whistle training early on so you will need a whistle and eventually you will need a slip lead and dummy.

We have a shop on site selling a selection of key equipment. We can also lend you various bits during training to try before you buy.

How many dogs/handlers per class?

We never have more than 8 dogs per class although more than one person per dog is welcome.

Each dog/handler will have plenty of space within which to practice.

Where do your classes take place?

We are easy to get to from Marlow, Beaconsfield, Maidenhead, Taplow, Henley, Bourne End

How old does my dog need to be to start?

Like most things, the younger your dog starts the better, but we welcome dogs of all ages, it’s never too late!

We offer Puppy classes for fully inoculated puppies up to 6 months old.  Older dogs start on our Foundation course and we have had dogs from 6 months to 5yrs old join our Foundation course and work their way through the levels with great success.  Read some of our testimonials.

No prior experience is required however your dog should ideally have some interest in retrieving items.
